Stephen Prudhomme has started a running tour of Savannah's historic district.
A runner and certified tour guide, Prudhomme takes his guests past some of the city's most beautiful homes and squares during a 90-minute tour. One of the most popular spots is Chippewa Square, where Forrest Gump sat on a bench and recounted his life story to a stranger while waiting on a bus. His tale included his cross country running odyssey.
Prudhomme, a veteran runner of 25 years who has completed two marathons, a dozen or more challenging Savannah Bridge Runs, and the half at the Savannah Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, combines a workout with a historic tour.
Participants run from one site to another and cover some 4-5 miles. They'll stop at some dozen or so locations, including eight of the city's iconic squares, for a five-minute history lesson before resuming their running. The pace is adjustable, based on weather conditions and the inclination of the group.
Prudhomme got the idea for his tour after reading an article in a running magazine about a hotel offering guided running tours. With its unparalleled beauty and historic flavor combining to make Savannah a runner's paradise, a tour a la Forrest is just what the tourist ordered.
"I wanted to give visitors an up close and personal look at the city," Prudhomme says. "You can learn the history and also get a good workout. It's a participatory tour. Plus, when you get done, you can eat with a clear conscience at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House, the Pirates House or any of the other restaurants offering Southern food. There aren't too many tours where you learn something and get a personal sense of accomplishment beyond enduring the chatty person or crying child sitting behind you on a bus or trolley.”
Tours begin and end at beautiful Forsyth Park. The price is $50 per person. To schedule a tour date and time, call (912) 704-1117, or go to spsprudhomme(at)gmail.com

"Thank you for the running tour. I appreciated your friendliness, taking into consideration my pace and goals for the tour (fitness vs. history, etc.). I really enjoyed the overall experience, along with the history and stories I learned. The price was also very reasonable. I will definitely recommend you to any of my runner friends who visit Savannah." - Ania
"Had a great time with Steve on Savannah Runs! Learned a lot of history and about the local running scene. Much appreciated that Steve adjusted his normal pace downwards to mine. Don't miss this if you're a runner visiting Savannah." - John M, Boston
"Steve, thanks for the excellent running tour. If I were a schoolteacher, I’d give you an A-plus with a gold star. You were informative and engaging. I cannot think of a better way to sight-see than with a running tour with you."
- George Derwin, Winnipeg, Canada.
"Doing a running tour with Steve was a perfect way to start my trip. I learned facts about Savannah, enjoyed the scenery, and fit in some exercise too. I am more of a jogger than a runner and I felt perfectly comfortable the entire time."
- Leslie, South Carolina.
